Addiction Facts
You are not alone…
Tens of millions of Americans abuse alcohol and other substances, both legal and illegal. Forty percent of ninth-grade students reported having consumed alcohol before they were age thirteen.
Addictions to food are creating a national health crisis, with obesity rates that are out of control. Fully two-thirds of the U.S. adult population is now considered to be overweight or obese, leading to life-ending illnesses such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and stroke.
The economic and emotional impact is staggering.
Alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse cost the United States an estimated $220 billion in 2005. By comparison, the costs associated with cancer was an estimated $196 billion.
Alcohol abuse in men increases the chance of partner abuse by 800%. Two-thirds of victims of intimate partner violence reported that alcohol was involved in the incident.
Incredibly, 95% of alcoholics die from their disease… on average 26 years earlier than their normal life expectancy.
So, why don’t they all just quit using?
Answer: Because they can’t… at least not on their own. An addict needs the drink… the drug… the food… the sex… the gambling… like you and I need to breath.
And addicts break things… relationships, hearts, and promises… because that is what abusers do. People who are hurting… hurt others.
Unfortunately, at one time or another, most addicts and their families have tried to solve this on their own… and failed. So they tried again and again… and failed. Others have sought advice from doctors or professionals who have never been trained in the particularly difficult and unique challenges of addiction. And again, they failed.
